Kirrak Party movie review: Cracker of a college film
Cast: Nikhil Siddharth, Simran Pareenja, Samyukta Hegde, Rakendu Mouli, Viva Raghav, Brahmaji and others
Director: Sharan Koppisetty
Nikhil Siddharth was introduced in a college backdrop film in Happy Days and after 10 years, he attempts another campus story Kirrak Party. This is a Kannada hit film and it was remade in Telugu with the same title. Sharan Koppisetty is making his debut as a director in this film and also two female leads Simran Pareenja and Samyukta Hegde are there.
Krishna (Nikhil), a first year engineering college student enters into the campus along with his gang of friends. Love blooms at first sight when Krishna sees final year girl Meera (Simran) who is writing a book on sex workers.
Both Krishna and Meera becomes good friends and fall in love with each other. A fun event turns emotional when Meera is forced to take alcohol by her friends in the hostel room and she falls from the balcony and dies.
This incident changes Krishna’s life and he becomes serious and rude as he enters his fourth year of graduation. Another girl, first year student Satya (Samyukta) enters into Krishna’s life as she likes him and decides to change him. In between, the gang divides into two with few differences. Will Krishna change and get back to normal and what joins the gang of friends again is the remaining story.
Campus stories are always interesting depending on the director and how he will narrates it. Sekhar Kammula’s Happy Days was a big hit 10 years back and then a couple of directors tried their luck in between on the same lines.
Director Sharan Koppisetty’s debut with this Kirrak Party, remake of the Kannada film with the same title, is a story that happens in a college. While you are watching this film, it definitely reminds you of films such as Premam and Happy Days.
This film is almost an extension of those two films. The first half is about campus fun, rivalry, ragging and how Krishna falls in love with Meera. The director is completely successful in showing the fun moments and definitely everyone is taken back to their college days.
There are a few emotional scenes after Meera and Krishna fall in love with each other. The second half completely focuses on Krishna and here the director reduces the fun quotient. The pre-climax and the climax is once again interesting.
Two other directors Chandoo Mondeti and Sudheer Varma have also helped the debutant director with good dialogues and screenplay. Some of the campus scenes are natural and provide good moments. Sharan did a good job as a director not to spoil the remake.
Nikhil’s performance is definitely highlighted as he is shown in two shades. In the first half, he has a completely boyish look and the second half is a more serious one.
Nikhil becomes more hefty and has also changed his looks for the second role. He has been choosing different types of scripts in the last few years and this one is also one among the good ones.
The two female leads Simran Pareenja and Samyukta Hegde have delivered excellent performance in their debut roles.
Samyukta actually acted in the original film and was included in the remake too. Rakendu Mouli, Viva Raghav and others in the gang provides some natural, humourous situations. Brahmaji is also there in a funny role and he has done justice to his character. The songs are good and the background music was perfected by Ajaneesh Loknath.
Dialogues by Chandoo is entertaining. There are a few drawbacks, especially in the second half where the entertainment quotient is reduced and focus is on Nikhil’s heroism.
Finally, Kirrak Party is a good film portraying campus fun. The film will definitely attract the college students. You can surely watch it once!
