Kalpana 2 movie review: Neither scary nor funny
Director: R Anantha Raju
Cast: Upendra, Avantika Shetty, Priyamani
One more ghost and another attempt to scare the audience away! To do so, this week it is the turn of a popular ghost from a hit franchise which makes a comeback for the obvious - revenge. Unfortunately the ghost, which is actually an import (remake of Kanchana 2) from the scary house of Kanchana of Muni series, is neither scary nor funny unlike its prequel.
Nothing has changed so far, as the characters are created from the same old template – a hero who is real scared of ghosts that a slight reference to it, and he would jump onto his mother’s hip. Same ghost with new targets for revenge with different past attached to it. May be the number of horror movies, and mostly the variety of ghosts are to be blamed that it is no more a scary affair even for those who lack ‘spirit’ for the onscreen devils. Their luck at the box office while riding on the star heroes seems to be fading away and the scary tactics is not funny anymore.
And, for those who are familiar with this ghost. Yes, the protagonist still wears diapers but for some relief, he has now got himself a personal watchman for company during night. Upendra maintains the same tempo and the new additions - Avantika Shetty as his new love interest and Priyamani as a supporting ghost that apart from Upendra playing few more ghosts is the highlight for 149 minutes of horror saga with some double entendre jokes, mostly gay jokes!
Worried over another TV channel overtaking it to become number one, a TV channel in which the female lead works comes out with an idea to raise the TRP by producing a reality show around a haunted house located next to the beach. During the shoot, she encounters something unusual and it leads to the entry of ghosts. Avantika acts well but fails while delivering her Kannada dialogues. And finally, it ends with the typical climax song followed with the ghosts taking one on one for the mega fight killing the bad one. Despite being stale, there are some hilarious moments which make it watchable, and the rest depends on one’s spirit!
