Movie Review 'Priyanka': Murder, he wrote!
Cast: Priyanka, Tejus, Prakash Raj, Veena Sundar
Director: Dinesh Baboo
Known for his cinematographic excellence and his ability to tell a story with suspense and drama, this director is back with another experiment. This time, Dinesh Baboo, is inspired by the real life murder case of a techie in Mysuru who is allegedly killed by his wife and her lover in Priyanka. After learning that the murder was close to his masterpiece — Amrutvarshini, he has webbed a perfect thriller leaving his trademark work all over Priyanka.
All it took for an experienced campaigner like him to tell a story was the careful literature and the acting brilliance of someone like Prakash Raj and the dedicated Priyanka Upendra. The use of social media and highlighting how it sometimes plays spoiler in personal relationships is the crux of the film.
The emotional content leading upto the climax is brilliantly poised for guaranteed entertainment. Though it is purely for the audience with a leaning towards Baboo’s work, others expecting a typical commercial clichéd flick might also find it refreshing with a composed screenplay that is thankfully quite close to reality.
The film revolves around three characters — Priyanka Upendra who portrays the role of a beautiful and successful software engineer who is married to a software engineer after a courtship on social media.
Given that they missed out on any kind of love-life before their marriage, the couple attempt to reignite their relationship by connecting to other people on the social media, while pretending to be in “no-relationship” status. This leads to love blossoming, as Ashwath (portrayed by Tejus in his youth and much younger to Priyanka), a small time electronic sales businessman falls in love with Priyanka. He finds and follows her on Facebook, and the fun soon turns tragic as the lovers plot to kill her husband.
Prakash Raj who plays one of the interrogating officers questions Ashwath, who has admitted to the killing, and we must say that he is at his usual best. As the killer admits to the offence, will he face jail time or will he walk free with hardly any evidence against him? Priyanka is another trademark in Baboo’s films, and minus minor hiccups and shades of Amrutavrshini, it is indeed a good watch “in the end!”
