Madhu, an ode to adivasis

Apart from the usual attractive elements used in cinema, this movie will not include double entendre dialogues, pranks and funny scenes.

It was news that had shocked the whole state. A tribal man was beaten up by a mob and he died while being taken to the hospital. Now, director Akhilesh Guruvilas has decided to make this incident the peg of his upcoming movie Madhu, a film that he hopes will hold a mirror to society. Though he feels this movie will appeal only to a limited audience, he is still determined to make it one of his best works.

“Through this movie, I am trying to portray the real lives of Adivasis living in the forest area. The whole movie will revolve around the life of Madhu,” says the director.

Apart from the usual attractive elements used in cinema, this movie will not include double entendre dialogues, pranks and funny scenes. It will only visualise and give importance to reality. “I feel content while making feature movies, even though these may not be profitable”, he says, adding, “We have a group of youngsters who are aware of the essentiality of such a movie to be made in this era. This is how the feature movie Madhu is going to be a reality.”

He hopes this movie would be a record of the evil and harmful activities of those living on earth and would remind future generations that such murderous people existed. These days people fail to react. When we see an accident on the road, we know that the victim must be hospitalised sooner, but we are conscious about all those consequences and formalities that lie ahead, making us turn a blind eye. Even are children are brought up to not react.

“Adivasis had another way of living. They had a Moopan as their leader, to correct and control them in each Ooru. This kind of ruling was taken away and the political parties have ruined their and land everything,” the director says.
Such things will be highlighted in the movie, which will focus on the way Adivasis are treated and the politics of oppression surrounding them. The movie will be completely shot at Attapadi, to capture the real-life characters and situations. “There is need for a change in the law. Otherwise, society will remain the same. Madhu is a tale of the evil happenings in society, rather than a direct telling of the tragic story of Madhu,” he explains.

The cast include Siddique, Indrans, Kiran Raj and Jayan Cherthala. “I expect the movie to be screened at film festivals after the release,” says Akhilesh, who has earlier directed Achante Ponnumakkal and Poompatta-kalude Thazhvaaram.
