Secularism drives society: P T Kunju Muhammed

Filmmaker calls on scribes, colleagues to focus on Dalit issues

Palakkad: Filmmaker P.T. Kunju Muhammed told filmmakers and journalists that it was their duty to convey to the public that secularism is the driving force behind society. He was speaking here on Tuesday at the Press Club during the inauguration of a short film fest jointly organised by the Press Club’s film society, Library Council and Nehru Group of Institutions.

“The refugees from Syria and Libya are getting refuge in Christian dominated countries in Europe. In Kerala, starting from the rule of Zamorin of Calicut in the 10th century, secularism was upheld and it has been mentioned in the poems written by Muslim poets,” he said.

The director also said that technology had developed to such an extent that with the help of a computer, a movie can be made and short filmmakers can make good use of this technological advancement. Mr Muhammed further said that the filmmakers need to focus more on Dalit issues as they still lived in oppression. More than 60 films will be screened during the three-day festival.
