Rajan case on silver screen again

The movie had also won international accolades, including the Cam©ra d'Or at the Cannes that year.

The infamous Rajan murder case during the Emergency period is getting yet another big screen adaptation, this time in black and white. The students of Oriental Film Institute, Kozhikode, are making a political thriller Kaattu Vithachavar, based on the incident. The feature film, which will star Prakash Bare, Tini Tom and several other actors, is being directed by Dr Satheesh Paul.

The movie revolves around the investigation conducted by DIG Rajgopal Narayanan in 1977 on what happened to Rajan - who was arrested from Regional Engineering College, Calicut, in a case of mistaken identity as a Naxalite and was allegedly killed after long hours of extreme torture in police custody. What happened to Rajan still remains a mystery as his mortal remains were never found. His father Eachara Warrier waged a legal battle against the State for years to know about the truth behind the incident and to get a confirmation about his death in custody.

Earlier, in 1989, Shaji N. Karun had made the national award-winning movie Piravi based on the incident. The movie had also won international accolades, including the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes that year.
