We should be able to feel the music: Vishnu

Vishnu, the son of music director Mohan Sithara, talks about his compositions for the movie Basheerinte Premalekhanam.

Mohan Sithara has enthralled an entire generation with his music, so it is no surprise when his son stepped into the world of music composition. Vishnu Mohan Sithara is a true chip of the old block. The songs he has composed for Farhaan Fazil-starrer Basheerinte Premalekhanam have already received rave reviews with the soulful ‘Penne Penne’ raking up more than 2.5 lakh views on YouTube. Basheerinte Premalekhanam is his third project. “The movie has five songs. We have already released two video songs.”

I believe all the audio versions are out.” Speaking more about the songs composed for the movie, he says, “All the songs have a Sufi touch to it. When director Aneesh Anwar discussed the movie with me, he suggested how he wanted it. I had thought of doing three songs initially as nowadays movies do not have many songs. At the most, just two. But later we decided that we will go with five. I was told that the movie needs songs with an yesteryear touch and the scenes unfold against a Muslim backdrop. That’s how we did the song ‘Pranayamaanithu’.

‘Penne Penne’ gives importance to a letter.” Vishnu has also lent his voice for two of the songs. So what type of music does Vishnu like? “We should be able to feel the music. That is the kind of music I like . Music has taken on a different form now and there is nothing wrong in adopting the kind of music people like now.” On his father’s influence on him, Vishnu says, “Yes, my dad’s music has definitely influenced me. I have sat around with him while he composed. I was young then and the process of music creation fascinated me.”

Vishnu has worked with his dad during his high school days. “It was during the composition of the song ‘Thekkini kolaya’ for the movie Sufi Paranja Katha. That was my first tryst with music composition. Chithra chechi had sung that song.” And Mohan Sithara went onto win the Kerala State Award for that song. Asked about his upcoming projects, Vishnu says, “As of now, I have not taken up any and yes, bringing out a solo or an album is also on my mind.”
