Women in Cinema Collective plans year-long events

A curtain-raiser event titled 'Punarvaayana' will be held in Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram on May 26, 27 and 28 respectively.

KOCHI: Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), the first women professional group in cinema, plans to have year-long events to sensitize and generate institutional support for gender equality in cinema and address attitudes towards traditional gender norms marking the first anniversary of the formation of the organization. The aim of the project is to build an inclusive workspace. A curtain-raiser event titled 'Punarvaayana' will be held in Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram on May 26, 27 and 28 respectively.

There will be film screenings in the three cities and with discussions on the movie exhibited. The event is expected to see the participation of various women organizations, Malayalam film fraternity, media, lawyers, writers, bureaucrats, politicians, youth, social activists and NGOs. 'Punarvaayana' will be an official launch of the event series WCC will be conducting for the next one year, the first of which is scheduled tentatively in August 2018.

Being a unique movement in Malayalam Cinema, WCC stands for an inclusive workplace, free from exploitation and gender discrimination. The year-long series is a beginning towards achieving this goal. WCC envisages diverse programmes at every quarter of the year as part of the yearlong series of events. The future plans include consensus building workshops with film trade associations, networking and rights awareness workshops for the film fraternity like meet and greet, write-shops, panel discussions among others.
