Savarakkathi is close to my heart: Shamna

The Jannal Oram actress plays Subathra, a pregnant deaf woman in Savarakkathi.

Shamna Kasim alias Poorna’s last outing Thagararu didn’t give her the much-needed recognition she desired. After giving continuous hits in Telugu, the actress managed to bag the female lead role in Ram and Mysskin—starrer Savarakkathi, which is directed by GR Adithya.

The Jannal Oram actress plays Subathra, a pregnant deaf woman in Savarakkathi. Speaking about the role, she says, “I get very emotional when I talk about Subathra and that is the reason I broke down during the audio launch. I am too young to play a mother of two children. I was sporting a prosthetic belly (made in Mumbai) throughout the shoot. At one point in time, I started eating like a pregnant woman.”

For Poorna, it was initially difficult to enact the role of a woman from a village. “For the first two days, it was really challenging. Mastering the local slang was a huge task. I shot for the film for 20 days, but dubbing for it took longer,” she explains.

Sharing screen space with directors Ram and Mysskin was like a dream-come-true for the actress. “I am lucky! Irrespective of the result, the film remains one of the best experiences in my career,” she asserts.

When probed if the movie would have serious moments, Poorna quips, “The teaser may look quirky and funny but, as the story progresses, it will have ample emotional moments.”
