Untrained, but a good Bijibal find: Arun Alat

Innaleyum fame singer Arun Alat, who was discovered by music composer Bijibal, owes his career to his mentor

One of the melodious hits of M-town last week was the Innaleyum song from Asif Ali-starrer Kavi Uddheshichathu and singer Arun Alat says the song happened to him by chance. “The song was finished just a week before the movie's release. The sequences were shot before and thus, have no lip sync with the lyrics. The song was decided after the pack up, but music director Vinu Thomas and lyricist Rafeeq Ahmed came up with a good song in a very short span. For me, it was a good experience working with Vinu, who has a different style of music.”

Originally from Kasaragod , the singer, who entered the industry in 2010 by singing for composer Bijibal, has a number of hits along the way. “It is with Bijibal sir that I learned the most. I have not taken any dedicated formal training during my younger days, but was very active in the college music scene and thus got noticed by Bijibal Sir when I sang for a radio programme. It was an absolute surprise and that excitement keeps me going.”

On his preferred genres of music, he says, “I like to listen to different genres, but when it comes to singing, I like slow-paced songs. But Bijibal sir advises me to go for peppy songs. In a way, that is true as the output is good when I go for them,” says Arun. What is more exciting is that the singer is coming up with his first music production ‘Jani’ composed by him and penned by Nikhil S Mattathil. It has been my dream for long, says Arun, adding that he doesn’t want to compose for movies.

“I used to compose during college days. This venture is materialised by Bodhi Silent Scape. The song is under the production phase and will be released by December. I am not sure if I can do music for movies because the creative space is restricted and it takes much ability to handle that. We need to consider the director’s ideas, story and everything that comes with the movie. I am quite excited about my independent project which is coming out soon.” His upcoming projects are Avarude Ravukal and Swarna Kaduva.
