200 reasons for Sandalwood's

Golden eraThe Kannada film industry is going strong with the release of over 200 films this year..

The Kannada film industry, Sandalwood has a rich history dating back to more than eight decades. It has created history with the number of movies releasing every year. The year 2018, has been significant on various counts, including the number of movies released, surpassing the 200 mark, and still going strong. Bhairavageetha, a bilingual made in Kannada and Telugu which was released last week, is number 207 for 2018. That apart, Kannada movies have also started to make good business even with the challenges faced, and are even setting a milestone with regard to creating a path to release films in multiple languages. KGF, Phailwaan and a few others are set to release in several other languages. Bengaluru Chronicle reports on the magical 200 number, and the ups and downs of Sandalwood for 2018, and more.

“The industry would only witness a handful of movie releasing in the initial days on a yearly basis. There have been a few years when not even a single movie was released. Such has been the situation in the past. But, slowly Sandalwood has taken off on a steady journey and the industry is flourishing despite several odds,” says producer Harish.

He adds that it is certainly a great year as the films have crossed 200 and the number looks to go beyond 220 with three more weeks to end the year.

“What is more important is that the quality of films, filmmaking and experimental cinema from a new breed of filmmakers and artists has made others notice Sandalwood. This must be appreciated. Once the industry was totally driven by star presence, and today it is running based on equal preference given to star actors and new films with a difference or the so-called experimental and unique ventures,” explains filmmaker Santhosh.

On the one hand, huge budget films running in crores like The Villain starring two big heroes are made, and on the flip side are films like Gultoo, Churikatte, Sarkari Hiriya Prathamika Shale, Humble Politician Nograj and other unique films which are equally appreciated by the audience.

“About their success rate, it is still disheartening. In financial terms, only a few films are earning real profit. However, the industry is busy with innumerable projects and this gives hope and works for the countless. Even star actors are encouraging new talent which is the big take away. This boosts a lot of possibilities and aspirations in the coming years,” producer Prashanth signs off.
