If there is a producer/director /actor combo that is adept at weaving on-screen magic with realistic storylines that invariably strike a chord with the audience, then Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya are the men. This duo has managed to translate their friendship into a profitable business venture with the Punyalan franchise setting the box office registers ringing. Just months after the second installment of the hit Punyalan series, Ranjith has announced his next venture through his Facebook page.
The first look poster of the title Njaan Marykutty evokes curiosity since the title and the name of the producers — Ranjith and Jayasurya are written on a sanitary pad. With the Akshay Kumar-starrer PadMan creating a buzz in Bollywood, it is only natural to wonder if there is any similarity. PadMan is based on social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham who created a low-cost machine to produce sanitary pads for women and girls in villages.
Ranjith, while denying that his film has anything to do with PadMan, does reveal, “PadMan was a story that I wanted to make for a long time and I had even discussed this story with a lot of people but the reason I finally backed out was that since it is a real-life story, I thought it would not be convincing if I made it in Malayalam.” Njaan Marykutty, he says, is nothing like that story and that is as far as he will speak about the storyline. He is not willing to let out any detail about the film except that the film is the story of Marykutty with a lot of specialties. He is also not breaking tradition and Jayasurya will be the leading man with the other cast members kept under wraps. The film will go on floors by March and the team is aiming for a June release. Till he does decide to let the cat out of the bag, Marykutty will remain an enigma.
