Simple complications

Steive Johaan's Avarude Selfie delves into the idea of how a simple situation can land you in big trouble.

There are times when even the simplest situation might push people to go that extra mile in search of an amicable solution. Something as simple as forgetting a key could land someone in a world of unexpected troubles. Steive Johaan’s quirky short film Avarude Selfie deals with something similar although it might seem funny, on a second thought, shows how a very simple situation could put someone in a fix.

Avarude Selfie has garnered close to one lakh views online and has become a talking point among youngsters. “The idea behind Avarude Selfie struck when I was discussing another short film with our DoP Chandrakanth. During the talks, we came across an incident in Ernakulam city where hotels were reluctant to provide rooms to women after the families of two people who were given rooms created a ruckus.

We thought about a situation in which a girl in this city is stuck in a simple situation and is in search of a room at odd hours. With that as our central theme, we built the rest of the story around it,” says Steive, who has also acted in the short film.

Steive is just stepping into the film industry and is currently working as a manager with a pharmaceutical company. He is also a student of Actlab, Kochi. Steive shares the story behind his decision to act. “The realisation happened after my wedding album shoot,” he laughs. “Dance happened first. I was part of various competitions and TV programmes 10 years back. Acting was always there in my mind, but I never had an opportunity to explore it. Then the wedding video happened. Those who saw it suggested that I should try acting. Soon, I joined Actlab and worked for few albums and short films.”

Steive is currently in talks regarding his big screen debut as an antagonist.
