When hard work bears fruit

For Ajmal Zayn who plays Vivek in Kinavalli, the road to films was a long one.

Kinavalli, directed by Sugeeth, gave a delightful experience to the audience. The movie, which featured six newcomers, has completed 50 days in theatres and is still having a good run at the box office. Ajmal Zayn, who played the central character of Vivek in the movie, is absolutely thrilled by the success of his debut film. Ajmal had always chased movies passionately and is so proud that his wait for movies was worth it.

“I was always interested in movies. Being an ardent movie fan, my love for acting began in college. There, I had the opportunity to work in some short films made by my friends. My passion took a serious turn there. From then, I tried getting into movies through auditions and all. I had to leave to Dubai after graduation, but my passion for acting kept on growing. I used to meet many directors when they came to Dubai, attended auditions there, send my profile for auditions etc.,” he says.

Ajmal had been trying to make it since 2010 and was working with the marketing department of Kairali TV, Dubai.

His life took a U-turn when his friend Sachin Senan introduced him to director Sugeeth for a casual meeting at the latter’s flat. However, Sugeeth liked him and asked him to try out an audition there. He flew back to Kerala soon after the audition. “To be honest, I didn’t have much hope. Sugeeth chettan knew I was in Kerala and messaged me asking for another audition in Kochi. I was selected for the movie after that. Life changed in the interval of 10 days,” he adds.

Kinavalli will be an experience he will never forget. He asserts that his perception of movie-making changed after associating with this movie. He credits Sugeeth for being a solid mentor, who had crystal-clear ideas about every shot and even corrected their minor mistakes. “Sugeeth chettan told us the movie stresses more on friendship and we had to have that sync. We gelled well before the shoot and that result was seen on screen. Besides us, the movie also introduced 20 debutants in different departments.”

He says the team was always confident about the quality of the movie. Currently he’s hearing some scripts, but hasn’t finalised on any movie. “I’ve been getting many calls and messages since the movie’s release. I’m very happy and proud that my passion and talent have been recognised. I wish to sustain as a good actor,” he wraps up.
