Kerala High Court stays corporation proceedings against actor Jayasurya

The charges against the actor included violation of CRZ rules and municipal building rules.

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court ordered a stay on Thursday on the eviction of the alleged backwater encroachment by actor Jayasurya at Chilavannoor here. The order has been issued on petition filed by Jayasurya on the proceedings by the Corporation of Cochin to demolish the boat jetty built and compound wall which was started on Wednesday. The charges against the actor included violation of CRZ rules and municipal building rules. The boat jetty was demolished on Wednesday and the corporation secretary had issued an order to demolish the compound wall also. Though the actor had approached the local administration tribunal against such move, it had rejected his appeal following which the demolition proceedings were initiated.

The High Court has stayed the demolition proceedings till further orders. Mr Jayasurya contended before the court that he has not made any encroachment and the corporation has initiated the proceedings without conducting a survey in the area. He also said that the basement of the compound wall was existing when he purchased the land and he only erected a fence for the safety and security of his children. He argued that the orders of the tribunal and corporation secretary were unsustainable.
