Malayalam actress abduction: Cops see jail video for arrest

The footage will now be sent for a forensic examination to confirm its authenticity.

Kochi: In a day filled with suspense over the possible arrest for conspiracy in the actor abduction and sexual assault case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Tuesday unearthed more evidence, including footage of main accused Sunil Kumar aka Pulsar Suni, using a cellphone inside his prison cell. However, the cops did not resort to any arrest as the top brass, led by Crime Branch IG Dinendra Kashyap, were huddled at Aluva police club late in the evening to ascertain whether the evidence collected so far in the case was sufficient for arrest.

Sources said the SIT decided to complete the probe in three days and already handed over instructions to at least three persons, including an actor-director, not to leave the city without informing them. Earlier in the day, a police team examined CCTV visuals inside the Kakkanad district prison recorded over the last three months and recovered footage of Pulsar Suni, who allegedly violated the actress, using a cell phone inside the cell.

In visuals, Jinson, a cellmate of Suni, and a few other prisoners, can be seen moving around while Suni was busy making calls, sources said. The probe team earlier got a vital lead when cellmate Jinson gave a confessional statement that Suni contacted filmmaker Nadirshah over phone from the jail on at least three occasions, with one call lasting as much as eight minutes. The footage will now be sent for a forensic examination to confirm its authenticity. The cops will also examine CCTV cameras outside the prison complex to identify the persons who had frequently visited Suni. Meanwhile, dramatic scenes were witnessed when Suni was produced before the Angamaly Judicial First Class Magistrate Court which extended his custody till July 18.

“There are some big sharks involved (in the case) and they are yet to be caught," Suni told media persons on the court premises. His counsel B A Aloor said Suni didn’t move a bail petition as he feared for his life and considered it to be safe inside the prison. The main accused also told court that he was tortured in custody by the cops, a charge denied by police surgeon Dr Rajesh V R, who maintained that the accused had not sustained any internal injury. When Suni was brought to the court, Aloor and another advocate, Tenny, quarreled, claiming to have the brief. The issue was settled after Suni signed an advocacy petition for Aloor after the court’s intervention. The court also granted bail for the seventh accused in the case Charlie, who had given shelter to Suni at Coimbatore while he was on the run after the attack carried out on February 17.
