Dream run to filmdom: Bini Noble

Bini Noble, who quit her corporate job to pursue filmmaking, achieved her dreams through the movies Hidden, Maddy and Running Away.

Like many youngsters who quit their job, to pursue their passion, Bini Noble too resigned from her job as the Head of Partnerships at Bombardier in Switzerland in 2013 to become a filmmaker; from then on, there was no looking back for her. Unlike many others, Bini was very clear about the reason behind this shift. As Bini puts it, “I wanted to break the mould created for women by society and wanted to let people know that in a man’s world, when a woman tries to break through the shackles and make a mark or touch people’s lives, she is not stupid and has immense strength and will power to achieve her dreams.”

A Malayalee by descent, Bini moved to the USA for pursuing a course from AFI. As part of the curriculum, she made 4-5 short films, which was her first step to filmmaking. She has produced around eight short films and has collaborated with around 20 so far. She is mainly known for producing the films Hidden, Maddy and Running Away, which, despite being her initial projects, gained her applause for its strong themes. Running Away is a feature film made for French Television.

Bini is presently in India for a visit and she was pleasantly surprised by the welcome and support from local filmmakers in Kerala and Mumbai. “I am overwhelmed by the response I have got from India after these many years. I have therefore decided to try and make it partially home again, while working with some amazing talents,” she added. Bini is in talks with filmmakers and producers and is hoping to work on an Indian project in the near future. The films Bini has produced have also been nominated in some of the major film festivals.

A short film she produced in 2014 has gone to LACMA, Newport, Palm Springs, Melbourne Queer Fest and Outfest and three of her recent films have gone to some of the biggest festivals in the US, including the AFI Fest, LA Shorts, Austin Film Festival, Cinequest and several others . Asked about her future plans, Bini says, “I hope to continue to make films and documentaries that’ll question our beliefs, make us think, and inspire us to live our lives to the fullest.” She is probably one of very few Indian women who have attempted to bridge the gap. Her goals are two-fold: to empower women to not give up their dreams but to fight for what they believe in, and, to get India visibility on a wider global platform, by finding like-minded people and doing more multi-cultural projects.
