Dream innings

Vannathi girl Sowmya Menon is glad about her Mollywood entry after all these years.

Malayalam album songs have gone through a resurgence period this millennium. Out of the numerous hits, the song ‘Vannathi’ from the album Mizhineer was an instant hit; thanks to the melodious rendering and heart-warming visuals. The viewers were also in awe of the Vannathi girl.

Since social media wasn’t popular in those days, she couldn’t be traced by her fans. Thanks to director Sugeeth, the girl, Sowmya Menon, could make a grand re-entry as one of the lead actors in the movie Kinavalli.

Sowmya made her big screen debut as Swathy in the movie which featured many newcomers in cast and crew. “I was working in Dubai as assistant HR manager and have been part of various advertisements of a few leading brands there. Through a friend, I got a chance to do a commercial directed by Sugeeth. He is someone who treats us more like a friend which made the shooting very comfortable. He told me that he had wished to cast me in Ordinary, but couldn’t contact me. When the initial announcement of Kinavalli came, I messaged him and he asked me to send my photos to his team. I received a call from him just one week before the shooting informing that I was selected to play Swathy. That was really surprising. The very next day I boarded the flight to Kerala,” she says.

Sowmya has also completed shooting for A.K. Sajan’s upcoming movie in which she plays the character of Saniya, a girl from Kozhikode. For Sowmya, it was a really cherishing and relaxing experience working with Sajan and his team. “It’s gratifying to know that people still remember me as the Vannathi girl. To get such a huge debut is a blessing. All thanks to God, Sugeeth and my Kinavalli team. I’ve longed to work in movies since childhood. If our dreams are sincere, we will definitely get a way to reach there,” she concludes.
