‘We make our luck’

Actor Nithin George, who has been waiting for the big break for many years, is all excited about his character in Luca.

We see Mollywood brimming with talent and there are actors who hail from all sorts of backdrops. So many of them have struggled their way to fame while others simply made themselves famous in another field before taking the silver screen by storm. For them, cinema is a great passion and they have been working their way out for a good opportunity. Actor Nithin George believes it is not only luck that takes you to where you want to be; rather you make your own luck. Though he had, for long, been in the industry essaying small roles, Nithin has got his big break in the upcoming Luca, starring Tovino Thomas in the lead. Luca is a romantic thriller directed by newcomer Arun Bose, who is also Nithin’s childhood friend. Along with Tovino, Nithin and Ahaana Krishna play two important characters in the film.

For Nithin, life after quitting his job, for the love of cinema, wasn’t easy. “I have been in the industry for more than 15 years and in between, I donned many hats, including that of a music arranger in an FM Radio. At one moment, I had to decide my destiny and I chose cinema over my job. It has not been easy since then though I acted in short films and a TV serial. My aim was films. I didn’t know Arun was in the industry and back in Kerala after his studies abroad. So, we met and shared our ideas and he was actually planning a movie in Tamil. We worked on the script together and it turned out well. The movie was the result of our hard work. It took us three and a half years to complete it. And its title, Alaiyin Thisai (or The Way of a Wave), couldn’t be better as it actually says a lot about our hard work and struggles.

Meanwhile, Arun was working on the script of Luca and had already met Tovino.” Alaiyin Thisai was screened at last year’s IFFI and sent to other film festivals.

Nithin says he was not supposed to play this important character but destiny had other plans for him. The actor who they had approached for the role could not make it and Arun asked Nithin to do it instead. “My character, Akbar Hussein, has some complex traits. A police officer, Akbar is going through a mental trauma after parting ways with his lover. He is part of an investigation and has to tackle his trauma at the same time. Vineetha Koshy plays my character’s pair.”

Though he is not new to acting, the excitement is still evident in his voice as Nithin shares the experiences from during his time on the sets of Luca. He hopes the film will be a break in his career. “I have been longing for a role like this and I had to put some things at stakes for living this dream. So, I really hope it is worth it and hopefully, everything turns out good.” He is all excited about the movie’s release, which is scheduled for the end of June.

In Luca, Arun Bose has co-written the script with Mridul George. Nikhil Venu is the editor, while Nimish Ravi is in charge of cinematography and Sooraj S. Kurup will be composing music.
