Jana Nayakudu Receives Lukewarm Response in Telugu States?

Despite the massive hype surrounding Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay's farewell film Jana Nayakudu, the dubbed release has failed to make a significant impact at the Telugu box office. Trade sources say the film has managed to collect just over Rs 5 crore share from approximately Rs 10 crore gross in the Telugu states, falling well short of expectations.

"Considering the pre-release buzz and Vijay's popularity, the collections have been underwhelming," says a leading exhibitor. "The film earned around Rs 2 crore share on its opening day, followed by nearly Rs 1 crore each over the next three days, before witnessing a steady decline in collections."

Trade circles attribute the muted response to inevitable comparisons with the Telugu original, Bhagavanth Kesari, on which Jana Nayakudu is reportedly based. "Many viewers found striking similarities between the two films and felt the original starring Balakrishna was more engaging and emotionally effective," the exhibitor explains.

According to exhibitors, while the Tamil version incorporates several socio-political themes tailored to Vijay's political image and Tamil audience, those elements failed to resonate with Telugu moviegoers. "The original was more balanced in its storytelling, whereas the remake leaned heavily into political messaging, which may have alienated sections of the Telugu audience," they add.

Vijay has previously enjoyed considerable success in the Telugu market with dubbed releases such as Adhirindhi, Master and Sarkar, while Leo emerged as one of his biggest hits by collecting over Rs 22 crore in the Telugu states. However, Jana Nayakudu has not been able to replicate that success, ending its theatrical run as a disappointing performer despite the high expectations.
