Casteism is all-pervasive: K Bhagyaraj

Minnal Murugan takes up the megaphone.

“Casteism exists everywhere, including in the creative field of cinema. I directed a film, Oru Kai Osai, several years back, highlighting the casteism that prevailed in my village, Vellankovil, in Gopichettypalayam. I feel the issue was not so serious in those days,” says K.Bhagyaraj. He was speaking at the promo meet of Puranagar, a film which has a similar theme.

Kamal Govindraj is debuting in this film directed by stunt choreographer-turned-filmmaker Minnal Murugan.

Hailing Murugan, Bharathiraja said “Rarely does a stunt master wield the megaphone in Tamil cinema. Even if they do, they will excel in action sequences, but when it comes to dialogues, they fumble. However, after seeing the sneak peek of the film, I found Minnal Murugan has made a confident debut.”

Meanwhile, peeved ace director RV Udhayakumar said he is yet to get a film despite turning out several hits in the past with the likes of Rajini, Kamal, Karthik etc. “We give so much of hype (in the scripts) to our heroes. They should also reciprocate by giving us dates. However, we cannot expect such things here. At least, do something to cinema which has given you so much”, he exhorted.
