I am not a porn star', Oviya fumes

Cinema being a visual medium won't it have a bad influence on your fans, we ask and she laughs.

“I am not a porn star to act nude in films. I am an actress who does commercial cinema. Just because we girls speak openly that does not mean we are ready for anything. Yes, there are lot of lip-locks, smoking and drinking scenes in 90 ML and it is the character Rita as essayed by me who does it and not Oviya the actress,” lashed out Oviya, who became an overnight sensation post her Bigg Boss stint.

Her forthcoming film 90ML directed by Anita Udeep, who has changed her name to Azhagiya Asura, has become the talk of the town ever since its first look and trailer was out. Its bold theme, provocative language and explicit depiction of what happens when five girls get together in private — seemingly in a ‘girls-gang-night-out’ — has captured the imagination.

The unabashed Oviya speaks to DC and justifies her stand. “After watching me in Bigg Boss, Anita ma’am called me for 96ML. Though I got a lot of offers after Big Boss, film 96 ML was striking and it has a strong female centric script and is from a lady director. So I grabbed it. The film breaks all stereotypical notions like a woman should be confined to certain things and should not vent out her feelings. I play Rita who works in a beauty parlour and it’s about five girls from different backgrounds who share an apartment and how they view life. Yes, it has an adult content and it is for mature audiences,” Oviya admits.

She adds, “We are not abusing men or common people. It is basically girlie talk among friends. Yes, there are smoking and drinking scenes. Is there anything wrong in women smoking and drinking?”

Cinema being a visual medium won’t it have a bad influence on your fans, we ask and she laughs. “It is the character Rita which is doing what is required for the script. And I had only apple juice in drinking scenes and everything we do on screen is not real. I don’t want them to follow my screen character; I want my fans to follow me as Oviya in real life. I do drink in real life but I know my limits. I never get behind the wheel when drunk, nor have I ever passed out. I was smoking when in Bigg Boss, but I have quit the habit now.”

And the Kalavanigirl says no to aping stars. “It is only cinema and we are just acting. Come, have fun and enjoy a movie. Don’t carry forward it further. Many actors who have projected themselves as do-gooders for society in films and using that as platform later turn into politician in real life.”

The movie has been awarded A Certificate and adults above 18 should watch it with an open mind, she asserts. “Don’t watch the film if you are a male chauvinist. You may not like it. Just by watching the teaser and trailer and without even knowing what’s the actual content of the film, I wondered how men made derogatory and cheap comments, which only shows their hypocrite mentality.”

On lip locks she says, “Those scenes were needed for the film and I have no qualms acting in such scenes. And won’t we kiss when we are in love? Kissing in not an offence and if both parties accept, there’s nothing wrong in locking lips (smiles). However, no one can touch a woman without her consent.”

Shifting the topic to her skin show in skimpy clothes in 90 MLhas her pouncing. “There’s a thin line between being glamorous and being vulgar. Is there any rule that women should be portrayed as tearjerkers in films? I have not acted nude in the film nor are there any rape scenes. It is my liberty to wear what kind of attire I should wear. No one needs to interfere in that.”

The svelte actress says that her romance with actor and Bigg Bossco-contestant Aarav has come to an end and she is now single and ready to mingle.

Oviya signs off with self-assurance saying , “I am ready to face the backlash.’

The film has music by Simbu who will also be seen in a cameo and co-stars Anson Paul, Masoom Shankar, Monisha Ram, Shree Gopika and Bommu Lakshmi.
