Director inspired by college hostel incident

Renowned writer turned actor Vela Ramamoorthy will be seen playing an educationist in a role with grey shades.

We saw films like Nayan’s Kolamaavu Kokila, Gangs of Madras and Bodhaiyeri Buddhi Maari recently on the drug mafia. Joining the list is a thriller titled Mayuran. Nandhan, who had worked with national award winner Bala, has taken a leaf out of his real life incidents when he was studying in college, where drug trafficking in the men’s hostel was common.

“I took the inspiration from my observation at my own college hostel and fictionalised it for cinematic representation. The story is set at a private engineering college in Chidambaram. It is an action thriller, where a boy from the hostel goes missing one night and the lead protagonist played by Anjan Dev gets into investigation mode. In the process, he chances upon shocking revelation of drug mafia. How he unravels the shadowy things forms the crux.”

He quickly adds, “Though I was aware of who were the culprits then in my college, I have not registered them in my film and mentioned that only those from the north are involved in the racket in the story. Ashmitha, a graduate from National School of Drama, is debuting as the lead girl.”
