Revathi slams Mohanlal for remarks on #MeToo
Veteran actress and filmmaker Revathy has slammed on her social media handle M’town superstar Mohanlal for calling the #MeToo movement a ‘fad’. She did not name the actor but it is clear who she means as she posted, “#MeToo movement a ‘FAD’ says a Renowned ACTOR. How do we bring some degree of sensitivity in such people? Like Anjali Menon says, the people who have just arrived from MARS have no clue what it means to get abused, what it takes to call out and how this can bring about change!!”
She tweeted in yet another post, “All of us have opinions but when celebrities voice theirs about a burning social issue, we need to be cautious. It is considered an attitude and is emulated by their followers making it a trend or ‘fashion’. Here comes our responsibility towards the future generation.”
At a recent press conference in Dubai, while reacting to a question on the #MeToo movement, Mohanlal had said, “There’s no big problem in the Malayalam industry. Just do not say things and create problems. You shouldn’t think of the #MeToo as a movement. It’s a fad and it’s turning into something of a fashion. Anything like that will have a temporary lifespan.” He also added, “It can happen anywhere in life, not just only in films.”
However, he had been quick to speak in a defensive way saying that he has never experienced such harassment and hence he was not an authority to speak on the issue. “We (men) can also come out with #MeToo, gender-wise. Only when you experience something like that, you can make a comment on it. Just giving a comment on it isn’t the right thing. I don’t know much about it (#MeToo),” he told Gulf News.
