Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth’s younger daughter Soundarya and her husband Ashwin Ramkumar approached Principal Family Court, Chennai on Friday seeking a divorce and an end to their 6-year marriage.

They were separated for a few months following differences of opinion and as attempts to pacify them failed, they have filed the petitions under Section 13-B of Hindu Marriage Act, which provides for Divorce by Mutual Consent.
In the petition they have stated that they have decided to end their wedding mutually and the duo sought the Principal Family Court to grant decree of divorce. The petition would be taken up for hearing soon.
Soundarya, a graphic designer by profession and film producer, had directed one of the biggest 3D Tamil films — Kochadiiyan starring Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone.
She also produced a film under the Ocher Picture production. She has also proposed to direct a film soon. It had been known for a while that their marriage was on the rocks but it was only after reports about her troubled marriage had first surfaced in print in September did Soundarya confirm that she has separated from her husband and said that divorce talks were on already.
“News about my marriage is true. We have been separated for over a year and divorce talks are on. I request all to respect my family’s privacy,” the Kochadaiiyaan director had tweeted in September.
Soundarya had always spoken highly of her father who was not only a dad but also a film star under her direction at least once. “He is a very simple human being. He never forgot where he came from. As his children, my sister Aishwarya and I learnt this from him — to never forget our roots. With our dad, there are no two faces. What you see is what he is. Whether it’s a fan or a producer, he treats them all the same. He has been down to earth all his life. He will never change. We, as his children, try to emulate that trait of our dad,” Soundarya had been quoted in an early interview.
The one thing that his younger daughter may not have emulated him in was staying married till ‘death do us part.’ One of the biggest society weddings of the year with the Superstar’s daughter marrying a wealthy builder’s family has now ended up in court with formal petitions seeking divorce.
