Kannan’s on a high

Music director Kannan, who won critical acclaim for his quirky songs in the parody film Tamizh Padam, had been on a hiatus but now he’s back with a bang with Tamizh Padam 2.

“I am basically a guitarist, and I’ve made several jingles. When I was introduced to director C.S. Amudhan, he gave me a chance to make music for his debut venture Tamizh Padam, which was the first film of its kind. He wanted a new sound, and we worked very hard. The songs were a huge hit, and the film gave me an identity. My second film Thilagar was set in a rural milieu, and that too gave me a huge scope,” Kannan says.

Needless to say, the composer was thrilled when he was asked to score music for the sequel to Tamizh Padam. “It is very difficult and challenging to compose music for a spoof film. TP2 had 13 songs that spoofed movies from Thevar Magan to Kabali. I was wondering if audiences would actually sit through the song routines. I tweaked each song with a new approach, and I saw great results at the cinema halls,” he says. Kannan is currently in talks for three projects that he’s likely to announce soon.
