Cameraman PG Muthaiah turns director

Cinematographer PG Muthaiah has several films such as Poo, Kandaen Kadhalai and Chandi Veeran to his credit. The ace cameraman recently donned the producer’s hat by bankrolling three projects in Tamil — Raja Manthiri, Maraindhirndhu Paarkum Marumam Enna and Peenchankai.

Now, PG Muthaiah is all set to add another feather to his cap. He will be wielding the megaphone for the first time in his career with a film titled Madurai Veeran.

Speaking to DC, Muthaiah says, “It wasn’t a conscious decision to make my directorial debut. I had a mass action oriented village script and I thought of making it into a feature film. I will be handling the cinematography for the movie, which will have its formal launch today.”

Since the film is rich in nativity, Muthaiah wanted someone who would fit the role aptly. “I chose Vijaykanth’s son, Shanmugapandian as the lead, while Samuthirakani will be essaying an important role. I want to clear the air that Madurai Veeran is not a film that will talk about the caste issues prevailing in the city. The film is based on an ongoing issue in Madurai. The full-fledged shoot will start in May. The rest of the cast and crew will be finalised in a couple of days,” reveals the cinematographer.

When asked which craft of cinema he would choose over the other two, he shares, “I cannot pick one. I’ve been in cinema for a long time and being a cinematographer, producer and director gives me a sense of purpose. I am someone who keeps working and can’t sit idle. Wearing many hats is something that comes very naturally to me.”
