Carrying a belly bag wasn't easy: Poorna
Poorna who goes to any extent to experiment with her roles is at it again. If she had tonsured her head for a character with negative shades in Kodiveeran, the actress essays a challenging role of hearing impaired pregnant lady and mother of two children in her upcoming flick Savarkatthi. In an exclusive, the Avunu 2 actress, who shuttles between Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films, shares her experiences with DC on working in her latest film.
Narrating how difficult it was to act as Subadhra, a full-term pregnant lady, she said, “The only thing which made me uncomfortable was to carry a 5 kilo belly bag made especially for this purpose in Mumbai all through 32 days of the shoot. I must thank my director Adhithya and Mysshkin sir who would finish off my portions first and allow me to be free. Otherwise there were no problems. I was given a workshop where I was taught the body language of as to how a pregnant woman walks, sits on the ground, etc. He also gave references as how to tie the sari in a particular manner. Also I have three married elder sisters whom I have been watching when they were pregnant and picked up some tips from them (smiles).”
We heard that you are scared of acting in front of Mysshkin. “For a beginner like me, I tend to fumble in front of legends like Mysshkin sir. For that matter, even I was a bit nervous in front of Raam sir who plays my husband. Though there are hardly any combo scenes between Mysshkin, and me, sir would always be on the sets to watch others performing. That was the biggest difficulty I faced (laughs). However, the only condition I put to Adhithya was that Mysshkin sir should not be present during the rehearsals,” Poorna quips.
Tell us about your dubbing your own voice for the first time. “I was very stubborn that I would do the dubbing myself despite Mysshkin sir having so much apprehension about it. On the first day of dubbing, I didn’t know what happened to me and I couldn’t speak even a single dialogue and came out of the studio.
The next day, somehow I gathered courage and did my work, but took a longer time than normal.”
The buzz is that four top actresses including Priya Mani turned down the offer. (Laughs) “I do not know whether those actresses were approached. But if so, I am really thankful to all of them, otherwise I wouldn’t have got a lifetime role like this. I think Priya Mani had missed out yet another award winning character like Parutthi Veeran.”
The actress asserts that she would not mind any role so long it is interesting and meaty. “I did Kodiveeran which had grey shades. Being an actress, I should try challenging roles.”
Are you eyeing awards? “Not really! Sometimes, you may end choosing something wrong. Your performance should be acclaimed. If awards come, I am happy.” Mysshkin interferes and vouches that Pooran will definitely get a national award for her alluring performance.
