The Academy may reject Visaranai: Auto Chandran
It’s indeed happy news for Tamil movie buffs all over the world, as Vetrimaaran’s national award winning Visaranai, a riveting crime thriller starring Dinesh, Samutirakani and Kishore has been selected as India’s official entry for this year’s Oscars. Before the worldwide theatrical release, the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2015. A proud Vetri Maaran confirmed the news and added that he was coordinating with the officials regarding his film’s Oscar hopes.
The film, which is an adaptation of Auto Chandran’s novel Lock Up, was hailed as a film of international standards. When DC contacted writer Chandran, he beamingly said, “We expected the film to make it to the Oscars. This is India’s official entry and it has to pass two more rounds to step on to the prestigious stage. Visaranai talks about violation of human rights, and it got global recognition when it was screened at the Venice Film Festival. Now after this announcement, it will be open to a wider audience and is bound to create more impact. It will be a mistake on the officials’ part if they don’t select our film. We haven’t really fixed the Oscars as our target — as there are chances that the jury might reject our film, because it might spoil the relationship between the US and India. So, regardless of making it to the Academy Awards, Visaranai will still be a winner,” he concluded.
