While woman-centric films remain the domain of A-list actresses like Nayanthara and Trisha, director Vidhyadharan is defying the norms. His upcoming film, Itly, which is the story of three grandmas who orchestrate a bank heist, has three veteran actresses —National Award-winner Saranya, comedian Kovai Sarala and late Kalpana — playing the protagonists.

Talking about the film, Vidhyadharan says, “Though it is a comic caper, it also has social issues laced into its storyline. The three leading ladies each have an aspect that’s unique to them — Saranya Ponvannan’s has an unbounded affection for her granddaughter, Kalpana has an OCD, and Kovai Sarala, who is unmarried, dreams of Manobala as a lover. The various circumstances these grandmas encounter in their lives, and the ways in which they deal with them form the crux of the film. I have also added commercial elements in the right amount. This film will be lapped up by family audiences.”

A film like Itly has never been made before in Tamil cinema. Shooting for the film was a completely new experience, according to Saranya.
