Vijay Sethupathi raises voice for the oppressed

The award winning director is known for issue-based films in which the actor will be speaking for the disadvantaged.

Shruti Haasan is back in Tamil after a brief hiatus with a Vijay Sethupathi film and the makers have revealed it officially. The movie has been titled Laabam (Profit). It is directed by national award winner SP Jananathan, known for issue-based films. Bankrolled by Sethu’s home banner and Aaru Kumar, the film went on floors at Rajapalayam on Monday. It is learnt that true to his sobriquet Makkal Selvan, Vijay Sethupathi will be seen as a person who raises his voice for various causes in the film.

Producer Aaru Kumar was not too willing to speak about the story but said, “The story is set with farmers as backdrop. But no, Vijay Sethupathi sir is not playing a farmer. He plays a guy who fights for the people’s rights. I can’t reveal much. And the title will be justified when you watch the film.”

Jana’s heroines normally have a lot of bearing in the script. How about Shruti whose real potential of an actress is yet to be exposed, we ask. “Shruti’s character in Laabam is such she is brave and daring. I suggested that she has the right attitude and outlook, which is needed for the role, and she would suit the role to a T and Jana sir also felt the same way. It is not that she plays a de-glam girl as wherever glamour is required from her, that will be intact (smiles).” The story travels all over south Tamil Nadu from Rajapalayam to Thenkasi, Vriddhacalam etc.”

Jagapathy Babu, seen recently in Ajith’s Viswasam, will essay the main antagonist. Kalaiyarasan has also been roped in for a crucial role. Top technicians including Ramji and Imman have been roped in for camera and music.
