Beyond the confines of film music

Madhan Karky and his friend Kauntheya have now started DooPaaDoo.com.

He is someone constantly innovating and rejuvenating himself with his ideas — and this is the latest of them! Lyricist Madhan Karky and his friend Kauntheya have now started DooPaaDoo.com, an online portal that caters to people who want to showcase their music talent. Karky tells DC, “The songs which people find here are available only on DooPaaDoo. We wanted independent music, especially by newcomers, to be recognised without piracy affecting the business. Anybody can send in his or her entry to us. More importantly, my company wants to encourage quality music, regardless of the name and voice behind it.”

Karky explains that right now the team is starting with Tamil songs, and will slowly expand to Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu music — and then go international in a span of 3-4 years. “This initiative will give us more space to distribute and create music. We have a team with us, comprising nearly 50 individuals that oversee the talent hunt. They respond to incoming entries. Also, the rights of the music lie with composers and producers of the music. We have decided to upload one song on a daily basis and celebrate it throughout the day. DooPaaDoo pays the creators based on the number of views their song gets on our website, lifelong. And finally, we pay our listeners to listen to the music, from advertisers, of course. 40 per cent goes to the creators and 10 per cent to the listeners.”

Karky says he already has 80 entries on hand including that A R Rahman, Imman, Karthik, Anirudh, Santhosh Narayanan, and Andrea. “The entries are being put through the review process to a panel of critiques by a blind review system. The review is attached to the song and sent back to its composers and then, it is taken to the listeners,” he adds. What did his father Vairamuthu say? “Appa was happy and was encouraging right from the scratch. He has in fact promised me that he would give at least 100 songs to DooPaaDoo this year. Let’s see,” he says and signs off.
