Actor sees future in politics

Tamil filmdom has thrown up several leaders and Parthiban could be the latest entry.

Ace filmmaker andactor Parthiban, who has lent a voice to many social issues, gave a strong hint about entering politics soon. A champion of environmental causes, he was taking part in the ‘Shore cleaning and Ocean Awareness’ programme in which the film team of the GV Prakash-starrer Kuppatthu Raja took part. Fisheries minister Jayakumar was also present on the occasion on which a boat race was conducted off Elliots Beach for fishermen.

Musician turned hero, Prakash, has also been spearheading many social activities that have helped build for him a growing reputation as a society conscious actor. Saravanan, the producer of Kuppathu Raja, also takes a leaf out of his hero’s book in venturing into social work.

Choreographer turned filmmaker Baba Bhaskar, who directs the movie, said, “A couple of months back, we had few people from ‘Ocean Awareness’ team approaching us for sponsorship to conduct a boat race in Besant Nagar. During discussions, it was revealed that over the past 4-5 years, a lot of waste material deposits are being found in the sea, where fishermen find nearly 60% of their nets filled with plastic material. So we decided to come up with the best we could do for this Boat Race”.

Though GVP could not make it, actor Parthiban, who essays a powerful antagonist in KR, was present there and interacted with the fishermen and media. The actor who voices out his concern in all social activities insisted that everyone should come into politics.

“It’s not an easy thing to avoid plastic materials and covers. Even a book when purchased from stores has a plastic wrapped to it. Eventually, what we can do is that not to throw it away on roads, but into dustbins or carry them back home and dispose of them thoughtfully.”

Reacting to a question if he would come to politics, the actor with a pun said, “Yes, I will foray into politics one day. Every citizen should come to politics. Whatever I spoke on the stage was also politically inclined. As a citizen, I had given a petition to minister Jayakumar sir that is viewed as a political thing. (Smiles).”

When asked about Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan entering politics, Parthiban said, Ï will reserve my comments till I come into active politics.”But then he quickly added, “Since I am already involved in several social causes, in a way I feel I am inside politics.”He went on to assert that starting a political party is not that important as taking up causes.
