Narain eyes lighthearted roles

Narain is one of the few actors who made an impact on audiences, with small but impressive roles. Rising to fame with films like Chithiram Pesuthadi and the recent Kaththukutti, he joined the sets of racy action horror flick Rum which has Hrishikesh, the cousin of music director Anirudh, in the lead.

Rum is the first horror film in his career and he’s pretty excited about it. Says Narain, “I am excited, and when the director approached me with the script, I was impressed by it and thought I should give it a shot. I would not say mine is a negative character, but it has different shades. I’m clear it will not be another villainous role, though.” So, what is his true calling — playing villain or hero? “I have this ‘chocolate boy’ image in Malayalam films. I am my usual jovial self there, doing light-hearted roles. It is only in Tamil films that I have been getting negative roles after Mugamoodi. If I had got the opportunity of playing roles similar to my Malayalam ones, I am sure I would have done a good job,” he smiles.

Ask him why he was missing in action for a while in K’town, and Narain says, “I was offered similar kinds of roles, and I turned them down because I fear getting typecast.” The Anjathey star surprises us when he says he wants to do more comedy films. “I was introduced in Tamil with quite a serious character and that continued for a long time. In fact, I waited for comedy scripts, because I thought I could do something different,” he signs off.
