I'm neither for nor against sport: Trisha

She said her Twitter account was hacked and a tweet was sent out putting me in very insensitive light.

Chennai: After coming under attack from several social media users and Tamil activist groups, popular actress Trisha on Sunday deactivated her Twitter account after it was “hacked.” She asserted that she believes in and respects Tamil culture and tradition.

Trisha, who has been under attack from social media users after pictures of her sporting PETA T-shirt, was circulated on WhatsApp, said she was “deeply hurt” at the disrespect and filthy language being used “towards me and the people who supported me, by some vested interest.”

“This is to inform the general public that I have been deeply troubled and defamed for no fault of mine over the last week regarding the Jallikattu issue. I made my stance very clear on my social networking account yesterday that I have never been against or opposed Jallikattu,” she said in a statement on Sunday.

She said her Twitter account was hacked and a tweet was sent out putting me in very insensitive light. “Considering the gravity of the issue I immediately reset my password and deactivated my account until the higher authorities get involved,” she said.

WhatsApp users did not spare Trisha since Thursday as “posters condoling her death” were circulated on the popular chatting app and supporters of jallikattu even gheraoed the shooting spot of a film in which she is playing the lead role. “I am never against my own people and keep wondering why anyone would go through such an extent to defame me and put me in bad light,” she said.

Political analyst Prof Ramu Manivannan says everyone should respect different opinions as well. “Though I may support jallikattu I don’t think anyone should make such comments against people who have a different opinion. This is not our culture and such things should not be encouraged,” he told Deccan Chronicle.

Senior advocate Sudha Ramalingam says a case under Sections 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) and sections 500, 501 & 502 (civil defamation) can be made against those spreading rumours about the actor. “They are outraging the modesty of the woman by talking about her and they are also defaming her by talking about her personal issues,” she said.
