Man of the moment
Ashok Galla, the son of billionaire Jay Galla, has every reason to smile as his debut film has just been launched.
Given his handsome demeanour and passion for the craft, it’s no surprise that the youngster got such an enviable launch for his debut film, and he’s all gung-ho. “I have butterflies in my stomach, but I am looking forward to it,” admits Ashok, as he settles down for a tête-à-tête.
Tryst with the camera
Interestingly, Ashok’s lineage can be traced to the Ghattamaneni family. Born in Chennai, the young Ashok made a brief appearance in his grandfather’s (superstar Krishna) film, Pandanti Samsaram (1992). 12 years later, he made another appearance in his uncle and superstar Mahesh Babu’s film, Nani.
“It was through my aunt Manjula that I got the opportunity. She was the first one to believe in my acting ability, and constantly encouraged me,” explains Ashok when describing that defining moment when he first thought about making a career in films.
During his formative years in Singapore where he studied theatre as a part of his curriculum, Ashok developed an interest towards films. “But on my father’s insistence, I pursued graduation (in filmmaking) at the University of Texas in 2014,” he shares, adding that the course gave him insights into the different aspects of filmmaking.
Mahesh Babu’s advice
The 27-year-old clearly did not take a shortcut to showbiz. He trained in fights and dance in Chennai, followed by an acting course under Satyanand in Vizag.
He then worked as an assistant director (AD) for Mahesh Babu-starrer Srimanthudu.
“Being on the film set was an insightful experience, and I understood how life would be on the sets of a superstar’s film. Mahesh uncle also gave me a few tips on various creative aspects, and I was able to envision how my life as an actor would be,” he says. As for the superstar’s advice to him, Ashok says, “He told me to be prepared for the challenges ahead and explained the sacrifices I would need to make.”
K. Raghavendra Rao’s support
Interestingly, Ashok’s film was launched in a grand way a year ago, but unfortunately, the project was shelved due to various reasons. “It was disappointing; I got very anxious. But it was a learning experience that only made me stronger, calmer and more organised,” he describes, adding that he went on a holiday to beat the stress.
Apparently, filmmaker K. Raghavendra Rao was instrumental in getting Ashok out of the tough times. “He is like a godfather to our family in every aspect of life. I drew strength from his words, and he gave me the confidence to move on,” says the youngster.
So, is he really prepared for a life in films? “I have seen how the life of an actor is. But I also want to enjoy the experience of filmmaking,” he states.
Mom was anxious
Apparently, Ashok’s mother, Padmavathi wasn’t too keen on his showbiz foray, and wanted him to assist his father in the business instead. “Having been born and raised in a filmy family, my mother has seen everything. So naturally, she was scared with my decision,” he reveals.
But after seeing his efforts, she was convinced and allowed him to pursue his dreams. “She decided that she would produce my debut film under Amara- Raja Media and Entertainment,” reveals Ashok, adding, “From reviewing the script to talking to director Sriram Adittya, she ensured that I would have a smooth launch.”
