Like a breath of fresh air
Ishaan Dev, the popular Malayalam composer-singer-songwriter who has won awards for his vocals in Kannada movies, is making a comeback to Tamil after a gap of eight years. The young composer who debuted with Ellam Avan Seyal in K’town is excited about his upcoming film Saaral.
The album was recently released and is garnering good reviews. “Saaral is the romantic journey of a bus ride and there’s good scope for music. A few scenes in the film have no dialogue for 40 to 50 seconds, and only music fills the silence. Composers rarely get such challenges and I hope I have made use of this,” Dev tells DC.
On his hiatus, he says, “I was scoring for Malayalam and Kannada movies. Of late in Tamil, I am seeing filmmakers coming out with quirky scripts which give a platform for adopting different styles in music. I wanted to equip myself well before getting relaunched here. In between, I sang for Sivamani sir in Kanithan.”
Ishaan shares his experiences having worked with legendary singer KJ Yesudas recently. “I was privileged when I got Yesudas sir on board for one of my Malayalam films. I was totally inspired by him for my classical as well as filmy songs. If you go to him fully prepared to clear his doubts while recording, then you have no problems. One day, he even gave me a lot of tips as a singer, taking out more than an hour out of his time!” he quips. He also says he is eager to meet maestro Ilaiyaraaja soon.
