Kollywood raises its political voice

Amid the current turbulent political scenario in the state, the who's who of the film industry speak their minds.

I n what seems like a first in Kollywood, several actors and actresses have expressed their anguish and have voiced their opinions on the current political scenario in Tamil Nadu. This is unusual and very uncharacteristic of many Tamil artistes. Even if some did nurture the ambition of entering politics, when asked about it, their answer earlier would invariably either be ‘I have no knowledge about politics’ or ‘politics is not my cup of tea’!

Now, it looks like the Tamil film industry has woken up to take its stand through various mediums. After writing an open letter to PM Narendra Modi, requesting him to dispel the mystery surrounding the death of former CM J Jayalalithaa, actress Gautami has also tweeted her views after OPS’ speech at Marina beach.

Speaking to us, Gautami says, “Firstly, I can’t speak for anyone else. I have already addressed several issues in the past, as it is the duty of every citizen. If, as an actor, I am able to reach a wider section of people, then I am duty-bound to voice my opinion. So, as a dutiful citizen, it is important to take a stand, whether it appeals to others or not. The critical debate is that we (people) have to remind ourselves of our democratic society and the way we elect our representatives. A group of subjects ruled by monarchs or a dictatorship is not the answer. People’s accountability must not be forgotten. Our forefathers have sacrificed a lot and the freedom we enjoy right now comes from the bloodshed and the hard work of every citizen of India. That should be protected.”

Arvind Swamy went a step ahead and posted a video of former CM late Jayalalithaa, talking about OPS, on his Twitter page. He said, “Watch this video. The speech about #OPanneerselvam by Ms. #Jayalalithaa. @AIADMKOfficial #Sasikala #TamilNaduCM #TamilNadu #ADMK.”(sic)

Arya, who normally shies away from commenting on political issues, tells DC, “Politics is a very vast field and I am not here to talk about it. But, with what’s going on in the state and the confusion that prevails everywhere, someone from the ruling party should address the people. At least OPS did that and I think it’s the starting point! It is very nice of him to clear his conscience and speak for the people. Whether it is true or not is a different issue. That’s why I tweeted, ‘Great bold speech by OPS sir at the right time. Hats off to him.”

Music composer D. Imman, who is also active on social media, wrote, “There it goes! Shows signs of hope in prevails! #OPS” (sic) Arulnithi, grandson of Karunanidhi, posted, “Bold speech OPS sir. You have been honest to the people of TN by letting them know the truth.”(sic)

Music director Gangai Amaren lashed out at Sasikala and her family for creating chaos in the state and praised Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. Speaking to media at an event, he said, “I have been a direct victim of Sasikala’s high handedness. She was part of the gang, which threatened me and grabbed my 22-acre farm house at Payyanur on Old Mahabalipuram Road, for a paltry amount when we were not willing to sell the land. How can such a person become the ruler of Tamil Nadu?”

Meanwhile, actor Siddharth tweeted saying, “Game of Thrones level drama in our state. The people have a right to know. We should not be taken for granted. Speak! Demand! #TN #Democracy.” (sic)

Dayanidhi Alagiri said, “I didn’t know OPS had it in him. But well done CM! He will be dismissed from the AIADMK party anytime. Coming soon. #BoldSpeech.” (sic)

While actor/filmmaker Bhagyaraj, a true follower of MGR went in person to OPS’ residence in the city to show his solidarity, his son Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, posted on twitter, “What a Twist in # TN Politics !!!!! He’s got the guts. A salute to him!!!” (sic)
