LGBTQI community takes offence at adult film

Following its release, the film has come under criticism for its portrayal of homosexual characters.

Members of the LGBTQI community in Tamil Nadu are protesting against the “objectionable” portrayal of women and a queer character in Director Santhosh P Jayakumar’s latest film, Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu (IAMK).

Transgender activist Apsara Reddy, along with LGBT rights organisation Chennai Dost, has lodged a petition with District Legal Services Authority Secretary, Judge Jayanthi, to summon the Director of IAMK, a film that the community feels discriminates against homosexual men and women. Activists has also met D.C. (IS) Vimala at the Police Commissionerate to seek deletion of scenes that lead to inciting violence against disadvantaged communities. The petition has been accepted by the Police.

Following its release, the film has come under criticism for its portrayal of homosexual characters. The gay character in IAMK is subjected to the usual ‘Avanaa nee?’ questions and is also told that gay encounters don’t qualify as a “loss of virginity.”

Representatives of the community tried to meet the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council Chief Vishal to demand an apology from director and lead actor Gautham Karthik for objectionable content in the film. They gave the petition to some EC members of the council.

The ‘A’ rated film, marketed as an adult sex comedy, encourages homophobia when a straight man in the movie says that it is because of gay men that people like him are not safe in public. The film goes further in mocking the rape of a straight man by a homosexual character.“It completely violates human rights because there are so many gay people fighting internal battles. They have to deal with bullying in school, making their parents accept them, look for opportunities and try to be part of the mainstream. With such a portrayal, they are ruining all the progress that the community is making,” says Apsara Reddy
