Vijay hints at entering politics
Ever since Thalapathy Vijay’s first look from his film Sarkar - where he was seen pictured ready to light a cigarette in his signature style - was made public, the actor has been dragged repeatedly into controversies. A recent speech of his at the film’s audio launch has brought him back into the spotlight as he more than hinted at the possibility of entering politics.
Vijay clarified he is not essaying a Chief Minister in Sarkar. When a hypothetical question was asked as to what the actor would change in the state if ever he becomes the CM, Vijay shot back, ‘Hope it’s an imaginative question! I will ‘not’ act if I become a Chief Minister in real life. Secondly, my foremost concern is to form a corruption free government, which I know is very difficult to achieve.”
Substantiating his political views by narrating a short story of a Maharaja who refused to take a pinch of salt free from a shop while travelling while insisting that he pay for it, Vijay said, “Only if those at the top refuse to accept bribes, ministers and those at the lower level will not encourage corruption. Still, it is not easy to clip corruption in the country as we are all used to it now. However, a leader will come under this challenging situation and form a Sarkar under him.”
Speaking freely on the plot of Sarkar, Vijay revealed, “If Mersal had shades of politics, in Sarkar Murugadoss has crafted ‘Mersal’ in politics”. His words confirmed the thinking that Sarkar is out and out a political movie which rips into the present governments with caustic references to corruption and politicians.
By doing this, Vijay may be cleverly trying to recreate the magic when his earlier movie Mersal, which had references to GST, demonetisation and Digital India, turned out to be a blockbuster. The political opposition to certain scenes and dialogues in the movie by BJP leaders turned out to be good publicity that helped the movie succeed at the box office.
“Generally, only after enormous hard work and campaign will politicians contest in elections to form the Sarkar. But we have already shaped our ‘Sarkar’ and are contesting in the elections for this Deepavali. If you like our film, come to the theatres and do vote for us”, Vijay signed off with a smile and enigmatic statement.
Sarkar is directed by AR Murugadoss and has AR Rahman scoring the music. Bankrolled by Sun Pictures, the film has Vijay, Keerthi Suresh, Varalaxmi, Radha Ravi and Yogi Babu in the cast.
