The screen adaptation of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, the epic historic Tamil novel by late Kalki, has been the dream project of many Tamil filmmakers including Mani Ratnam who is said to be gearing up with it now.
It appears now that the magnum opus will soon be explored on the digital platform and helming the project as a creative director is none other than Soundarya Rajinikanth. History scholar Sooriyaprathap S, who has worked with KS Ravikumar and Soundarya earlier, will be directing the web series, to be streamed on MX Player.
Soundarya, who directed Kochadaiyaan and VIP 2 and who also bankrolls the series, said, “From the day I read this amazing novel, I was determined to narrate this impeccable story in the visual medium. ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is indeed one of the greatest historical novels written in Tamil and considered by many as the crown jewel of Tamil literature. The novel chronicles the power struggle and the socio-political landscape of the Chola dynasty, one of the longest ruling dynasties in Indian history and is a perfect amalgamation of an intriguing plot, romance, adventure, satire and an enduring battle for the throne.”
