J&K’s First International Film Festival Attracts Entries from 50 Countries

Srinagar: The 1st International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026 has sparked remarkable enthusiasm across the global filmmaking community, drawing an impressive 875 submissions from nearly 50 countries.

This overwhelming response reflects the rising international interest in the J&K Government’s flagship cinematic initiative and signals Union Territory’s growing stature as a promising destination for world cinema, official said here on Wednesday. They added that the filmmakers still have a final chance to participate, with the submission window remaining open until July 30.

Scheduled from September 7 to 10, the inaugural edition of IFFJK is being organised by the J&K Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The festival aims to position J&K as a vibrant hub of creativity, cultural dialogue and cinematic excellence. “By offering a prestigious platform to filmmakers from around the world, IFFJK seeks to celebrate diverse storytelling traditions and foster meaningful artistic exchange,” an official statement issued here said.

It asserted that the robust participation from both national and international filmmakers underscores the growing confidence in J&K’s potential as an emerging centre for film production and creative collaboration. “The wide-ranging submissions—spanning nearly 50 countries—promise to enrich the festival with varied artistic perspectives, innovative filmmaking styles and culturally rooted narratives,” it said.

Over four days, IFFJK will present a dynamic blend of film screenings, interactive sessions, masterclasses, panel discussions and cultural showcases. These engagements are designed to bring together filmmakers, industry experts, students and cinema enthusiasts, encouraging dialogue, learning and new avenues of collaboration. The festival’s vision extends beyond cinematic celebration; it seeks to highlight J&K’s scenic splendour, cultural richness and creative potential before a global audience.

IFFJK also aspires to promote the scenic Himalayan region’s cultural heritage through cinema, recognise outstanding films from across the world and nurture artistic excellence. By encouraging cross-cultural understanding and appreciation of global film traditions, the festival aims to strengthen bonds of friendship and cooperation among nations through the universal language of cinema.

The journey toward this landmark event began with a curtain raiser ceremony on July 17, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah formally launched the first-ever international film festival of J&K. His invitation to filmmakers, artists, producers and cinema lovers worldwide marked a significant moment in the region’s cultural evolution and set the stage for what promises to be a transformative celebration of global cinema.
