Animation giant Pixar, which revolutionised the landscape of animated films with stirring films such as Cars, Toy Story, WALL-E, and more, has yet again broken barriers — by releasing its first animated film Out, in which the lead character is gay.

The short film, which is being streamed on Disney Plus and is being touted to bring LGBTQ+ narrative in the mainstream, follows an ordeal of Greg who is struggling to come out to his parents while preparing to move to the city with his boyfriend Manuel.

Written and directed by Steven Clay Hunter, fairy god-pets in the form of a magical dog and cat motivate him to tell his parents the truth. The movie also features a same-sex kiss.

Out has garnered positive responses from viewers. One netizen tweeted, “The new Pixar Spark Short, Out, has been played more than five times at home, creating a great conversation with my four-year-old son,” and it ended up with him saying, “Everyone can love anyone and I love it. Be still, my heart (sic).”
Earlier this year, Pixar’s Onward also featured an LGBTQ+ character.
