40-year-old Dawson’s Creek actress delivered the commencement address to over 2000 undergraduate students at the University of Toledo on Saturday. Interestingly, while Katie Holmes did not attend the college herself, she shared fond memories of her older brother Martin’s student days there.
People.com reports that the star gave several life lessons in her speech, including about the early years of her acting career and moving out of home. “Don’t be intimidated about that first job or internship or audition,” Holmes said, adding, “If you’re moving out, make sure you have what you need to feel comfortable.”
Urging students to be themselves, the mother of one stressed on the need for true friendships. “Women need each other now more than ever,” she said, adding, “I’ve been so lucky to know people who have given me their wisdom, experience and advice while I was growing up.”
