Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio wins, Priyanka Chopra Stuns

The most notable firsts from the 88th Academy Awards ceremony.

The 88th Academy Awards finally had an Oscar for Leonardo DiCaprio and it took the actor to survive a bear attack for the honour that has evaded him six times.

Leo was obviously thrilled and received a standing ovation, with Titanic co-star Kate Winslet watching on teary-eyed.

After collecting his Best Actor award, from Julianne Moore and waiting for the standing ovation he received to end, Leonardo, an outspoken climate change activist ended his speech with a line that will probably reverberate with, both, actors and environmentalists for a long time to come: “I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.”

Priyanka Chopra’s glitz
This year’s ceremony was also Priyanka Chopra’s debut at the Oscars. The star hit the famous Red Carpet in a sizzling white gown by Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad. She completed the look with a clutch, a low ponytail and 50-carat diamond earrings — all in all totalling a whopping $8 million.

She presented the Oscar for Best Editing along with actor Liev Schreiber. And before the big event, the actress impressed everyone around — not just with her choice of wardrobe but opinion too.

When she was asked about her career in Hollywood and her view of diversity, the actress said: “I just think that art shouldn’t be defined by the colour of your skin. The best person for the job should get the job and not because you look a certain way. That’s just a very primitive thought for me. I’m really happy (because) when I was cast in Quantico, it was because I was the best person for the job and not because of what I looked like or where I come from. I think that’s the way to go. Storytelling should be global.”

Priyanka also confessed she was feeling very “princessy” in her dress and that she was worried about “screwing up someone’s name”.

She also kept updating the world with loads of the behind-the-scenes photos — including a post with singer Pharrell Williams and Indian-origin TV star Mindy Kaling.

Pop star Jay Sean took to twitter to share his joy over Priyanka’s Oscar debut. He wrote, “A proud moment to see my homegirl @priyankachopra all over the Oscar’s. Keep slayin!! #brownpplting yesss”.

Actor Anupam Kher wrote, “Congratulations @priyankachopra for being probably the first Indian to present an award at #Oscars. You are the Best.:) #kuchbhihosaktahai”.

Also, Actress Sophie Choudry wrote, “So underwhelmed by the #OscarsRedCarpet this year but our girl @priyankachopra is a stunner!”
