Gunasekhar Calls for a Longer OTT Window to Boost Theatre Footfalls

The director has advocated for a three-month gap between theatrical release and OTT premieres, arguing that such a move could help revive declining footfalls in cinemas.

Seasoned filmmaker Gunasekhar, known for blockbusters like Okkadu and Chudalani Vundhi, has entered the ongoing debate on OTT release windows in the Telugu film industry. The director has advocated for a three-month gap between theatrical release and OTT premieres, arguing that such a move could help revive declining footfalls in cinemas.

Speaking at a recent media interaction, Gunasekhar said that shorter OTT windows have conditioned audiences to wait for digital releases instead of watching films in theatres. He suggested that implementing a uniform three-month OTT window for all films could encourage audiences to return to cinemas.

His comments come at a crucial time when exhibitors and producers are discussing standardized OTT timelines. Recent meetings at the Film Chamber have seen proposals ranging from eight weeks to three months, with stakeholders trying to arrive at a balanced approach.

Gunasekhar’s view is also influenced by the performance of his recent film Euphoria, which failed at the box office despite receiving some positive reviews. He believes that the increasing dependence on OTT platforms has significantly changed audience behavior.

At the same time, the debate highlights a key reality. Today’s viewers decide whether to watch a film based largely on its promotional material, and if it fails to generate excitement, they may skip the theatrical experience altogether.

As discussions continue, the industry’s final decision on OTT windows could have a lasting impact on the balance between theatrical exhibition and digital streaming.
