From winning Miss Universe India twice to gracing the judging panel of the prestigious pageant three times, Urvashi Rautela has lived an eventful journey. In an exclusive conversation with DC, the actress speaks about empowerment, representing India on the global stage, her choices in cinema, the lessons she has learned, and what lies ahead in her multifaceted career.
Looking back at your journey from winning Miss Universe India twice to judging the pageant three times, what do you think has been the most surreal moment for you?
From being the only woman to win Miss Universe twice, to judging Miss Universe & Miss Universe thrice officially, My journey is India’s journey of beauty, power, and pride. Tonight, I don’t just see contestants. I see the future of my beloved India. Also, it's my 10 year golden anniversary. Winning Miss Universe India not just once, but twice, and then returning as a judge seeing the next generation of empowered young women shine has been surreal. Standing on that stage, I didn’t just feel my own journey; I felt the dreams of every girl who dared to believe in herself. That feeling is beyond words.
What message would you like give young girls about self-empowerment and pursuing dreams?
Empowerment begins with knowing your own worth and embracing your uniqueness. When you honour your dreams with courage, discipline, and integrity, you not only shape your own destiny but also inspire those around you. True strength is the grace to rise, the vision to lead, and the heart to uplift others along your journey.
As an internationally recognised celeb, how do you think your achievements have impacted India's presence on the global stage?
To represent India on the global stage is a privilege and a responsibility. Every achievement becomes a reflection of our culture, our values, and our limitless talent. My hope is to continue bridging worlds—through cinema, art, and dialogue—showing that India’s essence is not just vibrant and beautiful, but powerful, intelligent, and transformative.
You have had a diverse range of roles in your acting career. What draws you to a particular project, and how do you prepare for your characters?
I am drawn to stories that challenge conventions, spark conversations, or reveal layers of the human experience. Preparing for a character is like exploring a new universe -understanding their dreams, fears, and choices, and embodying them with authenticity. The goal is always to connect with the audience on a level that feels real, intimate, and unforgettable.
In your opinion, what has been the most significant lesson you have learned throughout your journey, and how has it shaped you into the person you are today?
Life has taught me that success is not defined by accolades alone, but by resilience, self-awareness, and the courage to stay true to yourself. Every obstacle, every critique, is a lesson in disguise. Embracing these moments has not only strengthened me but has cultivated empathy, wisdom, and clarity in everything I do.
What's next for you? Are there any exciting projects?
The horizon is limitless. I am exploring projects that merge creativity, culture, and innovation—films, music, global collaborations, and social initiatives that create meaningful impact. My vision is to evolve continuously, not just as an artist, but as a leader who inspires and empowers others to dream without boundaries.
You have had your share of controversies. How do you deal with trying times?
These are inevitable when you choose to live authentically and boldly. I’ve learned to face them with composure, self-reflection, and grace. Challenges become opportunities to grow, to remain grounded, and to let your work and integrity speak louder than words. Staying focused on my purpose has always been my guiding light.
