Sanjay directed Salman in 'Khamoshi' (1996) and 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' (1999). The actor stuck around with Sanjay, when he was going through a tough phase after his maiden directorial venture bombed at the box office.

Reportedly, their friendship became strained when Sanjay approached Hrithik Roshan for 'Guzaarish', which revolved around a subject recommended by Salman. Salman was also Sanjay's first choice for 'Bajirao Mastani', however things didn't go as planned.

Sanjay had gone on to mention that Salman was upset about a few things which he wasn't aware about. But the director has always maintained that Salman has been good to him and he will never say a word wrong against him.

However, Salman took a dig at Sanjay in one of the Bigg Boss episodes and said, "Bhansali is surviving only because of Khamoshi and HDDCS."

On a lighter note, Sanjay last helmed the critically acclaimed film 'Bajirao Mastani', for which he went on to bag a National Award. On the other hand, Salman's 'Bhajrangi Bhaijaan' won an award for Best Popular film. The actor is gearing up for the release of 'Sultan' alongside Anushka Sharma.
