Karan Johar reveals why he was scared of remaking Sairat for Janhvi-Ishaan's Dhadak

As the box office collections of Dhadak touch the Rs 50 crore mark, producer Karan Johar, who was initially apprehensive about whether his director could do justice to the film, says that it is Shashank Khaitan’s best work to date.

Explaining how the film came to be, Karan says, “The entire Dharma Productions team watched a trial show of Sairat, and I went mad. Shashank was there, and he told me then that we had to make an adaptation. I was scared because the film had an individuality, and I didn’t think it could be remade. But Shashank’s confidence was infectious. ”

The filmmaker says that he decided right off the bat that the film merited fresh talent. “I knew it had to be made with newcomers like Ishaan and Janhvi,” he says.

And it was only when he saw the end product that he knew he had made the right choice. “I first watched some rushes, and later, I watched the film. The end really shakes you up; it took me a while to absorb the experience. I feel Shashank has done an exceptional job — he’s added new scenes and new characters. And though it’s only his third film, I feel it’s his best work,” the producer adds.

Shashank’s debut film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania made Rs 77 crore at the box office and his second film Badrinath Ki Dulhania crossed the Rs100 crore mark. Dhadak has made just over '50 crore so far. “We’ve only paid homage to Sairat and made a version for those who haven’t watched the original,” Karan says.
