Bollywood's summer vacation

B-town will not see any big releases for another two months, keeping in mind the coronavirus pandemic

With big films eyeing the global market as much as the Indian markets for revenues, the chances of them coming to a screen near you in the next two months seems remote.

Films like Sooryavanshi, 83, Radhe, Laxmmi Bomb, Coolie No 1, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Roohi Afzana, Shamshera, Chehre, Gulabo Sitabo, and Ludo will all see delays.

Film industry pundits are not in favour of any releases at all till everything is fine globally.

“The market for big-budget Bollywood films rests a lot on the overseas market. Around 30 percent of collections and sometimes more comes from international screens.

With traditional markets like the UK, USA, UAE and the fresher markets for Bollywood films closed till the end of May, there cannot be any big releases.

The small budget filmmakers may want to release their films when theatres open because they get a clean road, but that does not mean audiences will come.

China opened around 500 theatres as an experiment and they only managed to collect around 2000 dollars in a little less than a week. So, people are not going to the theatres even if they are open.

In the given circumstance, the industry does not want to risk expensive venture with foolish bravado,” says Atul Mohan, editor, Complete Cinema.
